Contributing to enhance capabilities of individuals is not only a life long passion for Shahid Akhtar, it is also an integral part of his professional life. Shahid offers a unique combination of experience, skills and qualifications. Having practiced as an International Corporate Lawyer, his career has displayed numerous skills in an array of capacities. In his role as Positive Workplace Facilitator and Coordinator of Workplace Discrimination and Harassment Prevention activities, he has focused on the implementation of programs directed at addressing the need for a harmonious workplace. His previous positions include Senior Advisor for Intergovernmental Programs in Ontario Government, Journalist, TV host, Mediator and Conciliator and Human Resources Specialist.
Shahid Akhtar has worked in a large, public sector organization with approximately 10,000 employees and close to 9 billion dollars budget for more than 18 years. He has trained more than 10,000 managers and staff in techniques to advance diversity, enhance corporate human relationships, promote leadership skills, comply with human rights requirements, prevent harassment and discrimination and resolve workplace conflicts. He conducted positive work environment workshops and coached individuals and groups on workplace interaction with the objective to create an inclusive, diverse and productive work climate.
He has specialized in conducting mediations between individuals and groups who have had dysfunctional workplace relationships with an excellent track record of successfully resolving conflicts between adversaries. He has carried out Workplace Environment Assessment in a number of large Broader Public Sector organizations. Some of these included large municipalities like Metropolitan Toronto, Ottawa-Carlton, Thunder Bay and Sault Ste.Marie and social services agencies like Goodwill, CNIB and Salvation Army. In this role he provided assessments of activities in the areas of diversity and inclusion, leadership; compliance with governing legislation; workplace conflict resolution; discrimination and harassment prevention; violence prevention; optimum use of program administration costs, risk management and corporate human relationship management.
In his voluntary life he is actively engaged in interfaith dialogue and has co-chaired the Canadian Association of Jews and Muslims for the past thirteen years. He recently addressed a European Union Delegation in New York about the Canadian approach to deep-rooted inter-faith conflicts. Shahid has volunteered to help a large number of individuals and families in resolving their conflicts in family, business and community settings.
